"Golgotha," the Hebrew name for the place Christ was crucified, means "place of the skull."

Tradition has it that the remains of Adam, the first man, were buried on this site - that is, the site of the crucifixion. Placing the skull of Adam at the base of the cross gives Jesus' blood the opportunity to run from the cross across the skull of Adam, which is to say, humanity.

It is an artistic means of announcing Christ's redemption from sin.
